Kerala government seeks Centre's help for more COVID-19 vaccines

With the onset of increased cases in Kerala and the second phase of the vaccination drive that is about to start, the Kerala government has urged the Centre to release the COVID-19 vaccine for the state and the health workers who missed the opportunity, to register again to receive the shot. State health minister KK Shailaja shot off a letter to her counterpart at the Center, Harsh Vardhan in this regard.

With the onset of increased cases in Kerala and the second phase of the vaccination drive that is about to start, the Kerala government has urged the Centre to release the COVID-19 vaccine for the state and the health workers who missed the opportunity, to register again to receive the shot.

State health minister KK Shailaja shot off a letter to her counterpart at the Center, Harsh Vardhan in this regard.

So far, 3, 36,327 (94 per cent of the revised target) health workers and 57,658 front-line fighters (38 per cent) have received the first dose of COVID 19 vaccine in the state. In addition, 23,707 health workers have got the second dose.

More doses of vaccine should be provided for the vaccination of the third priority group who are above the age of 50, health minister Shailaja said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan revealed that the state has reported a 5.3 per cent dip in fresh COVID cases in the state in the third week of February.

“As per the statistics available on Thursday, the total number of active cases was 60,178. In the last week (on Thursday), the total number of cases was 63,915. So there is a dip in 3,737 cases. It is a sign that the virus spread in the state is showing a dip," Pinarayi Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister also added that the increase in cases may be due to the relaxations on restrictions. “All of us should take precautions and necessary safety measures to bring down the spread of the virus. Vaccination is progressing well. People from all sectors should take vaccination without any room for apprehension.
