Iccons to conduct remedial teaching camp for special kids

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Institute for Communicative and Cognitive Neuro Sciences (Iccons) will conduct a remedial teaching camp for children with learning disabilities and life skill training for kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from April 3. "The life skill programme will focus on developing the 10 skills mentioned by World Health Organisation such as speech and language skills, decision making skill, empathy, response to distress, social skills, etc. The sessions will include mostly games and activities," said Dr Anil Kumar Nair, senior consultant psychologist, Iccons.Admission fee for the vacation camp is Rs 5,000 per child. A session on cerebral palsy and treatment protocols of Down syndrome was also held. The sessions in the remedial teaching programmes meant for children of age six and above will be handled by speech and language pathologists, psychologists and linguists.A special life skill programme which will focus on developing the communicative skills of kids affected by autism will also be conducted at the camp which is meant for kids aged 12 and below.

The sessions are scheduled from 9am to 1pm. The vacation camp will be conducted from April 3 to May 27 at the Iccons center at Pulayanarkotta near Ulloor.With an aim to ensure social security for kids affected by Down syndrome and in order to bring them to the mainstream, a special meeting of affected children and their parents was organised here on Tuesday. The meeting inaugurated by director of child development center (CDC) Dr Babu George was conducted jointly by the CDC, paediatric neurology department of Medical College,Thiruvananthapuram, IAP (Indian Academy of Paediatrics) paediatric neurology Kerala Chapter and IAP Thiruvananthapuram Branch as part of World Down Syndrome Day."The genetic metabolic unit in CDC which studies about the chromosomes in children will be expanded further," said Dr Babu George.Continuing education programme for paediatricians, entertainment programmes for kids and awareness programmes for parents was part of the meeting. A session on cerebral palsy and treatment protocols of Down syndrome was also held.
