Mahout trampled to death

A mahout was trampled to death by a tusker near Parassala on Thursday. On their way back after collecting leaves, Jayan fell down, landed near the elephant’s legs, and was trampled by the animal. The Travancore Devaswom Board has declared a solatium of ?1 lakh for the next-of-kin of the deceased mahout. The tusker, Sivasankaran, cooling off after it was brought under control. The incident occurred at Mundaplavila by around 10.15 a.m. when Sivasankaran, the 19-year-old elephant, was being taken to collect palm leaves.

Kannan managed to climb atop a coconut tree and remain there until the elephant squad arrived at the spot,” J.R. Ani, Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF)-Social Forestry, Thiruvananthapuram, said. The tusker was finally brought under control by around 2.15 p.m. after it was sedated by veterinarians. The Travancore Devaswom Board has declared a solatium of ?1 lakh for the next-of-kin of the deceased mahout. In a statement, the board has entrusted Devaswom Commissioner C.P. Rama Raja Prema Prasad to conduct a comprehensive study into the incident and to submit a report.
