Be responsible netizens, CM tells social media users

posted THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan posted a message on Facebook - with hashtag socialmediaresponsiblity- days after Angamaly native Eldo was trolled on social media for being `the first drunk' on Kochi Metro. Eldo, a speech and hearing impaired man, fell asleep on Metro train and a video surfaced, which named him as `Keralathinte pampu'.Facebook message which CM Pinarayi Vijayanwith hashtag #socialmediaresponsiblity-People thought that he was a drunkard, based on his posture. In his post the chief minister said that such irresponsible actions amounted to the violation of human rights."Two years ago, it was Salim on Delhi Metro and now Eldo on Kochi Metro. Both were victims of irresponsible social media campaigns.They became victims of public trial after people reported events wrongly without verifying facts," he said, adding that the government is bound to take action in such cases.Eldo was visiting his brother at Ernakulam general hospital. Relatives said that his brother's condition was critical and Eldo was upset that day. While returning home, his son Basil insisted on a Metro ride. Once they boarded the train, Eldo, who was tired, fell asleep. A media channel brought out the facts in Eldo's case and put an end to the false story.This was not to be in Salim's case, a Delhi police constable. He was pictured in a similar manner by the social media for `sleeping on the Metro' and was suspended from service.Over one lakh people had seen the post on social media and nobody bothered to get Salim's side of the story. But, his colleagues, who had faith in him, conducted an investigation, proved his innocence and saved his job. Even the Supreme Court intervened and criticized the social media for defaming a person without verifying facts.The trauma faced by Salim and family in the ensuing days cannot be explained, said Vijayan. The chief minister categorized this as a dangerous trend as unverified messages on social media were forwarded to several groups for maximum reach. He added that persons creating items or others sharing the same do not bother about the content and facts or how it affects people.He felt that those creatingspreading such sensational untrue news should be treated as culprits. More dangerous is the trend of spreading communal hatred in society , unleashing personal attacks against women and other individuals.This has become common and it should not be entertained, said the chief minister."We cannot say people are unknowingly creating such messages as several responsible persons too had created and spread such sensitive messages on social media.
