K. Anilkumar, BJP councillor from the Thrikkannapuram ward, was also part of the group which opposed the aerobic bins at Poojappura. However, B. Vijayalakshmi, the BJP councillor of Poojappura ward says, only this small group is opposing the installation of aerobic bins. The BJP workers, who opposed the construction work, said that the aerobic bins are located too close to a temple and educational institutions. The issue began earlier in the day as the work on the shed to house the aerobic bins was progressing. The aerobic bins will not create any sort of trouble to the people living nearby.

more-in The city Corporation’s plan to install a batch of aerobic bins in the Poojappura ward on Wednesday was opposed by a group of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers. The ward councillor belonging to the BJP though rubbished their allegations on the unsuitability of the location, saying that they are trying to disrupt the good work that she is doing for the ward. Five workers of the BJP, who tried to obstruct the work, were taken into preventive custody and let off later in the afternoon. The issue began earlier in the day as the work on the shed to house the aerobic bins was progressing. The BJP workers, who opposed the construction work, said that the aerobic bins are located too close to a temple and educational institutions. K. Anilkumar, BJP councillor from the Thrikkannapuram ward, was also part of the group which opposed the aerobic bins at Poojappura. “This is not at all a suitable location for such a waste dump, as it is near the temple and the VIP entrance to the Poojappura mandapam. Also, the juvenile home and the LBS Engineering College are located nearby. The Corporation went ahead with this without consulting the temple authorities or those living nearby,” said Sasi, one of the BJP workers. However, B. Vijayalakshmi, the BJP councillor of Poojappura ward says, only this small group is opposing the installation of aerobic bins. “The residents do not have a problem. The authorities of the temple or the educational institution do not have a problem. I don’t know why this group, from my own party, has a problem with it. We identified the location with the genuine intention of solving the issue of waste management in the ward. The aerobic bins will not create any sort of trouble to the people living nearby. We have two sanitation workers to take care of the bins round-the-clock. It will also serve as a plastic waste collection centre, from where plastic will be taken to the shredding unit,” she said. Work to continue Mayor V.K. Prashanth said that the local body would go ahead with the installation work of aerobic bins. “The location was identified by their own councillor. They have come up with a variety of reasons to oppose the bins, none of which are convincing. The work will go ahead as planned with police protection. Today’s work had to be stopped because of the rain in the afternoon,” said the Mayor.
