One more CPI (M) worker attacked

A CPI(M) worker was attacked by two unidentified persons, allegedly members of the SDPI, in Kattakada on Sunday. The police have also reported an alleged vandalism of a vehicle owned by a SDPI activist in the region. The alleged incident had taken place close on the heels on the vandalism of DYFI district secretary I. Saju’s house on Saturday. According to the police, Sasikumar, a CPI(M) branch committee member and an agent of the party mouthpiece Deshabhimani, was attacked by the duo who intercepted him on a motorcycle. The incident took place by around 6 a.m. when Sasikumar was on his way to distribute newspapers.

The duo began to allegedly attack Sasikumar using an iron rod, following which he fell from his two-wheeler. While he managed to run away, he was caught and subjected to a violent assault. Sasikumar, however, managed to escape from the area and sought refuge at a petrol pump, after which the perpetrators fled from the scene. Fallout of tension Sasikumar was soon admitted to a private hospital. He was later, referred to the Neyyattinkara General Hospital with serious injuries. The police suspected the incident to be related to the ongoing tension between the CPI(M) and the SDPI in the region. Meanwhile, the Thiruvananthapuram Rural police have arrested four activists of the SDPI in connection with the alleged assault of two CPI(M) workers at Kottappuram, near Kattakada, late on Saturday. Arrested Those arrested have been identified as Abubacker, 59, his son Shamnad, 33, Sudheer, 39, all hailing from Kottappuram, and Shabeer, 29, of Kollode. The alleged incident had taken place close on the heels on the vandalism of DYFI district secretary I. Saju’s house on Saturday. The police have also reported an alleged vandalism of a vehicle owned by a SDPI activist in the region. High security has been put in place in the region to prevent an escalation of the tense situation.
