Tuesday was one such Zero Shadow Day in Tiruchi. Standing outdoors at 12.15 p.m., students of Bharathi Matriculation Higher Secondary School demonstrated how the sun, at its highest point of the day, did not cast a shadow of any object on the ground for some moments . School Correspondent K. Balakrishnan explained how it will happen in Tiruchi again after six months, exactly on August 16. Using two balls of different sizes, he explained the motion of the sun in the sky with relation to the position of the earth. The sun moves from 23.5 degrees south of the celestial equator to 23.5 degrees north of the equator (Uttarayan), and back again (Dakshinayan), in a year, he said. The sun usually transits a bit lower in altitude, a bit to the north or a bit to the south, and is not exactly overhead on all other days of the year. The earth's rotation axis is inclined at 23.5 degrees to the plane of its revolution around the Sun, which is why we have seasons, Mr. Balakrishnan further explained to the students. A pole will be erected in the school campus for students to observe its shadow everyday at the same time to help them know better about the motion of sun in the sky, he said.
