Bandh evokes mixed response

In Tiruchi city, several shopkeepers kept their establishments open with no disruption to bus services or autorickshaws. Majority of shops and business establishments remained open in many districts, while in Nagapattinam district nearly 80% of them remained closed for the day. Though many shops remained shut in the morning, later they opened despite pressure from the Opposition parties in several areas. In neighbouring Pudukottai district, many shops were closed in the town, while several others remained open elsewhere in the district. In Tiruchi city, several shopkeepers kept their establishments open with no disruption to bus services or autorickshaws. Police sources said only 20% of the shops and business establishments were closed in Ariyalur district. In neighbouring Pudukottai district, many shops were closed in the town, while several others remained open elsewhere in the district. Around 250 DMK cadre were arrested after they staged road roko at 10 places in Nagapattinam district condemning the arrest of DMK working president M. K. Stalin at Madurantakam. The arrests were made at places including Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai and Vedaranyam. Thanjavur More than 620 cadre belonging to the DMK and its fraternal parties were arrested when they staged road blocks and agitations in 15 places across the Thanjavur district on Friday against the police action in Thoothukudi and demanded the resignation of the State Government owning moral responsibility for the loss of lives. However, the response from the traders to the call for a general shutdown was lukewarm in most places. The agitations and road blocks were held at the Old Bus Stand, Kumbakonam, Tiruvaiyaru, Kandiyur, Orathanad, Papaasam, Pattukkottai, Sengipatti, Budalur, Tirukattupalli and Peravurani among other places. Though many shops remained shut in the morning, later they opened despite pressure from the Opposition parties in several areas. Advocates resorted to a boycott of court work in Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Papanasam and Tiruvaiyaru to support the stir call.
