Fishermen allege attack by Sri Lankan coast guard

Trichy: Fishermen from a village near Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district who had gone for fishing, were attacked by the Sri Lankan coast guard in the mid-sea on Tuesday on charges of entering their waters. The coast guard is investigating the incident.In a similar incident, eight other fishermen from Arkkattuthurai – who went fishing in two separate boats belonging to Sasikumaran and Arumugam – were also allegedly attacked by the Lankan coast guard two days back. Further, the fishermen claimed that their fishing nets were also snapped.Following the incident, the fishermen reached Arkkattuthurai fishing jetty on Tuesday night. They then snatched the cell phones, GPS equipment, torch light and other items from the fishermen, which is said to worth around Rs 30,000. However, the fishermen claimed that they were only within the Indian limits.The fishermen, Manidasan, Kumaran, Nambirajan and Raju, all hailing from Arkkattuthurai village had gone for fishing southeast of Kodiyakkarai in a boat belonging to one Dhaksinamurthy, on Monday afternoon.According to the fishermen, when they had travelled 25 nautical miles, they were suddenly intercepted by personnel in a Sri Lankan coast guard patrol boat.
