Sand truck driver fleeing cops falls in well at Vadipatti, dies

Madurai: A sand truck driver, who ran in the dark on seeing the police personnel, fell into a well and died. Police said one P Jayalakshmi, 46, from Vadipatti had placed an order for a load of sand with Jothibasu. He was spotted in the surface of the well, which did not have any water.Police began a rescue mission and brought Jothibasu out of the well. Based on a complaint, a case was registered with the Vadipatti police station and an investigation was also carried out. He came with a mini truck, fully laden with sand.

Madurai: A sand truck driver, who ran in the dark on seeing the police personnel, fell into a well and died. The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, when the driver was unloading the sand at a construction site in Vadipatti in Madurai district.The deceased was identified as C Jothibasu, 28, from Ramarajapuram near Mattaparai in Dindigul district. Police said one P Jayalakshmi, 46, from Vadipatti had placed an order for a load of sand with Jothibasu. He came with a mini truck, fully laden with sand. As he started unloading the sand at around 2am, a police team on night rounds, passed through the place.When police called him to inquire, he left behind the vehicle and started running towards the backyard of Jayalakshmi’s house. In the dark, he could not spot the well, which was in disuse. He fell into the well, which did not have a parapet wall. Police too went after him, but could not find him. They then brought a torch light and checked around. He was spotted in the surface of the well, which did not have any water.Police began a rescue mission and brought Jothibasu out of the well. He had suffered severe injuries and broken both his legs. Immediately, he was shifted to the Vadipatti government hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Based on a complaint, a case was registered with the Vadipatti police station and an investigation was also carried out. Higher police officers visited the spot in the morning and conducted inquiries.
