Trichy: After two long decades, Bharathidasan University has become eligible for an annual block grant of Rs 19.64 crore from the state government. The amount will be utilised to meet the expenditure on sanctioned posts in the university. BDU is among 10 universities to receive the block grant which was denied in recent years because of audit objections. The primary reason for denying the grant was the fact that Bharathidasan University had been among the few universities generating revenue which was several times more than the block grant from the state government.Anna University and Tamil Nadu teacher’s education university have been denied the fund this year for having surplus on their revenue account. Eventually it has now qualified to get the grant.Speaking to TOI, vice chancellor P Manisankar confirmed that they had received the block grant.Apart from the fact that they could clear the audit objection to secure the grant, he said that they had resolved to overcome the revenue deficit and that several measures were being taken to improve revenue. Till 1998, BDU has been generating revenue nearly five times the block grant fixed by state government for the university.Distance education courses have been the major source of revenue for the university.A senior faculty of the university said that MBA and MCA courses offered by the university through distance education were considered equal to the regular courses. However, when the popularity of such courses started waning, the university applied for funding again but it was rejected on grounds of audit objections. The university took efforts to reduce audit objections and formed a separate cell to rectify it.
