Trichy: A body mass index (BMI) machine was installed at the Trichy collectorate on Monday to create awareness among the general public about their personal health.The machine, installed at a cost of Rs 1.9 lakh through the district collector, K Rajamani’s discretionary funds would measure the height, weight, blood pressure, pulse rate and body temperature.According to Rajamani, the machine was installed at the collectorate after he thought about ways to create awareness about the personal health of people.“Lot of people visit the collectorate on a daily basis, including many from outside the city. All of them might not be aware whether they are healthy or not and if their blood pressure levels are normal. So this machine would serve as a means for the public to know about their basic health,” the collector told TOI. A person at the collectorate has been deputed to assist people who would like to want to know their BMI level.BMI is the measure of body fat based on one’s weight in relation to his/ her height. Ideal BMI is said to be 18.5 to 24.9. BMI less than 18.5 is considered to be underweight, BMI ranging from 25 to 29.9 is classified as overweight, while those who have BMI over 30 are considered to be obese.
