Vendors confront contractors over user fee at Ponmalai market

Trichy: Tension prevailed at Ponmalai weekly market as traders confronted the contractors who had come there to collect user fee in Trichy on Sunday.Hundreds of police personnel were deputed at the spot for security. According to the vendors, they had firmly opposed it and said that they would be willing to pay a maximum fee of only Rs 20. The traders organised a strike and closed the market from June 8 to 10. They also alleged that the private contractors assured that they would conduct a meeting regarding this before the collection of the next fee.On Sunday, the contractors arrived at the market to collect Rs 175 (fee for Sunday market), without holding any prior meeting, according to the traders.

The traders organised a strike and closed the market from June 8 to 10. They also alleged that the private contractors assured that they would conduct a meeting regarding this before the collection of the next fee.On Sunday, the contractors arrived at the market to collect Rs 175 (fee for Sunday market), without holding any prior meeting, according to the traders. “They came with heavy police protection and asked for user fee in an intimidating manner, without conducting the meeting as they promised, so we confronted them,” said Asogan, a trader from Ponmalai market.Hearing about the incident, Kumar reached the spot and said to have assured the traders that further meeting would be held regarding the amount that would be collected as a user fee. Following this the market functioned as usual.
