As part of beautifying Trichy, the city corporation has started work on a stretch below the Palakkarai flyover. The linear stretch under ward number 23 in Ariyamangalam zone will be converted into a mini park with LED lights and walking track for residents.Palakkarai flyover that connects Melapudur, Bhima Nagar, Sub Jail Road and Madurai Road with one another is equipped with four arms including the one over the Uyyakondan canal. The flyover is accessed by thousands of people every day. The space beneath the arms of the flyover has been facing encroachments and recently residents and commercial establishments started dumping waste there. Hawkers and anti-social elements also use the space. To safeguard the space from becoming a mini dumping yard, the civic body had mooted a plan to beautify about 500 feet space by setting up amenities for the residents.As part of the Rs 20-lakh plan, the corporation began preliminary work on landscaping, illumination and a walking track last week. "We have planned to provide an ‘8’ shaped walking track in the available space. Flowering plants and shrubs will be grown below the flyover without affecting the structure to promote cleanliness," corporation commissioner N Ravichandran said. The move would also prevent advertisers from spamming the pillars of the flyover with graffiti and wall posters.Official sources said that the move would indirectly ensure public hygiene in and around the flyover besides providing a platform for Palakkarai residents to engage in physical exercises. Based on the feedback, officials said that similar mini parks could be set up beneath Thennur flyover near Shasthri Road and Thennur High Road.
