Samayapuram temple jumbo recovering, say veterinarians

Trichy: Samayapuram temple elephant, Masini, is recuperating well at the veterinary college and research institute at Orathanadu where it was shifted to on Friday following an illness. “Temple officials panicked after Masini suffered from diarrhoea which extended for a couple of days. Experts from the Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai too visited the elephant and examined its health condition. They were analysing the reason for the wound. There was a drop in the food and water intake when it came to the Orthanadu but it had increased now and it could walk on its own for about 100 metres, he saidMohan further said that the elephant has been remaining calm and it would be kept for at least 10 more days at the institute.

The elephant which killed its mahout in a fit of rage inside the temple in May was brought to the institute after its food and water intake came down and it fell ill.Saying that Masini was recovering well, member of the district-level captive elephant welfare committee, K Kumaraguru, said that the elephant was facing the same issue encountered by all captive elephants when they remained away from the wild. “Temple officials panicked after Masini suffered from diarrhoea which extended for a couple of days. It wouldn’t have been the same in the wild where elephants can self-medicate though medicinal trees and plants which are lacking in the urban areas,”he said.Dean in-charge of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Orathanadu, B Mohan, told TOI that the elephant was brought to the institute following complaints of swelling in the front right leg and in the abdomen region. There was a drop in the food and water intake when it came to the Orthanadu but it had increased now and it could walk on its own for about 100 metres, he saidMohan further said that the elephant has been remaining calm and it would be kept for at least 10 more days at the institute.
