With the Mettur reservoir being opened for irrigation on Thursday, the district administrations are pushing for the expeditious completion of the desilting and kudimaramathu works. The River Conservation Division of the Public Works Department has taken up desilting works on 43 irrigation canals in Tiruchi, Thanjavur and Ariyalur districts at an estimated cost of ?3.33 core and Director of Horticulture N. Subbaiyan inspected some of the works being carried out on Uyyakondan canal, Thottiyam Chinnavaical, Vadakarai Vaical, Peruvalai Vaical and Panguni Vaical in the district. He also inspected removal of silt from the Malattar at Valadi and instructed the PWD officials to execute the works on a war footing so that the water released from Mettur reached the tail end areas. He also met representatives of farmers associations at Mokkumbu. Collector K. Rajamani, T. P. Ganesan, Executive Engineer, PWD RC Division and Selvaraj, Executive Engineer, PWD Ariyar Division, accompanied him. In Nagapattinam, S. Nagarajan, Additional Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, inspected works under way on irrigation canals at different places in Tharangambadi and Sirkazhi unions. Accompanied by Collector S. Suresh Kumar and Asaithambi, Executive Engineer, PWD, Mr. Nagarajan inspected the desilting and kudimaramathu works on Velan Vaical, Rajendran Vaical, Thanlanchakadu Vaical, Melaiyur Vaical, Neithavasal Vaical and Mudavan Vaical. D.J agannathan, Managing Director, Tamil Nadu Textbooks and Educational Services Corporation, inspected the kudimaramathu works at Keezh Velur, Odacheri, Radhamangalam, Nariyankudi and other places in the district. Kiran Gurrala, Deputy Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, inspected the desilting works in Thanjavur district along with Collector A. Annadurai. Mr. Gurrala also inspected the ongoing renovation works on irrigation structures at Manniyar in Papanasam taluk and desilting works at Kongan canal in Sarukkai panchayat.
