Two detained for ‘attempt to rob’ Tamil outfit leader

Trichy: Thanjavur police on Friday detained two men suspected to have been involved in the attack on Tamil Desiya Periyakkam leader P Maniarasan on June 10, but for ‘robbery’ attempt. They would reveal the identity of the accused in a day or two.It may be recalled that though the police claimed that it was a robbery attempt, Maniarasan had been maintaining that the incident was a bid to threaten him. The police said that the two used to come from Chennai to Thanjavur every week to indulge in robbery. He sustained injuries and so did Srinivasan, a member of the outfit who was riding the bike. Sources said that the police could trace and catch them through a mobile phone stolen by the duo from a woman in Thanjavur.

A senior police officer said that they picked up two people from two places in Chennai on the suspicion that they were involved in the ‘robbery’ attempt on Maniarasan.The TDP leader was travelling pillion on a bike to board a Chennai-bound train at Thanjavur railway station when a couple of bike-borne men pushed him down on the road at Natchatra Nagar in Thanjavur around 9 pm. He sustained injuries and so did Srinivasan, a member of the outfit who was riding the bike. Sources said that the police could trace and catch them through a mobile phone stolen by the duo from a woman in Thanjavur. The police said that the two used to come from Chennai to Thanjavur every week to indulge in robbery. They would reveal the identity of the accused in a day or two.It may be recalled that though the police claimed that it was a robbery attempt, Maniarasan had been maintaining that the incident was a bid to threaten him. Taking the case into serious account, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had ordered to form three police teams to nab the attackers.
