Wanted Sri Lankan couple arrested while trying to flee

Trichy: The Thuvakudi police arrested a Sri Lankan Tamil couple, who was allegedly involved in several robberies in Trichy and Namakkal districts, from the airport here on Thursday. The couple was trying to escape to Sri Lanka, police said.A police team led by inspector Madan caught Rajan alias Kettiyan Pandi, 33, and his wife Roopa, 22, at the Trichy International Airport. While Sivaguru and Vigneshwaran were caught by passersby, Rajan fled the scene.Investigations revealed that Rajan’s wife Roopa was also involved in robberies. Police said they would bring the employees of the jewellery shop also within the ambit of the investigation. The couple has been lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai.The police interrogation revealed that the couple used modus operandi in Namakkal areas that they would roam in the streets as if they are looking for a rental house.

They were residents of a refugee camp in Namakkal district.The police nabbed them based on information about their attempt to escape to Sri Lanka through Trichy airport.Though the couple was involved in several cases of robberies, a recent chain snatching incident at Vazhavandhankottai on the outskirts of Trichy on July 4 prompted the police to nab them.The police said a three-member gang comprising Rajan, Sivaguru and Vigneshwaran snatched a gold chain weighing three sovereigns from a Sri Lankan refugee named Devakumari, 50, who lives in Vazhavandhankottai camp. While Sivaguru and Vigneshwaran were caught by passersby, Rajan fled the scene.Investigations revealed that Rajan’s wife Roopa was also involved in robberies. The couple has been lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai.The police interrogation revealed that the couple used modus operandi in Namakkal areas that they would roam in the streets as if they are looking for a rental house. After recceing the area, Rajan would operate with his accomplices at night.The police sources also said that Rajan used to exchange the stolen jewellery for cash at a particular jewellery shop in Namakkal for several years. Police said they would bring the employees of the jewellery shop also within the ambit of the investigation.
