Trichy: Young researchers, whose projects were awarded at the state level students seminar-cum-exhibition in Trichy on Saturday, would be guided by Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) for getting patents for their inventions.A total of 36 science and engineering projects won awards at the two-day event, which was organised at National College. A total of 500 projects in various fields including agricultural sciences, bio sciences, medical sciences, veterinary sciences, mechanical engineering etc., were presented at the event organised by TNSCST and the college. Among the 36 projects, 12 were awarded based on the exhibited prototypes, while 24 were awarded based on presentation. The 500 projects were actually chosen as the best student projects for the year 2017-2018 by TNSCST several months back and each were given a cash prize of Rs 10,000/- and were evaluated at this event post the completion of the projects. The presented prototype, instead of following the conventional form of measuring SpO2 by fitting the pulse oximetry device in finger or toe, will measure through the ear canal since the latter way is claimed to be more accurate. On the other hand, Eco Bank is a device which could be fitted in trolley suitcases and through its wheel movement, energy would be tapped and this in turn could be used to charge mobile phones and laptops. “The winners would be guided by TNSCST for getting patents for their projects for free of cost and further, they would also be guided for entrepreneurial opportunities,” coordinator of the event, M S Mohamed Jaabir said.Among the prototypes, a medical sciences project, Pulse Oximetry in the External Auditory Canal with Alarm & GPS, by a researcher M Afra and a mechanical engineering project, Eco Bank, by Mukesh P Jain and Milan D Jain, won plaudits among the jury. For people with health issues like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure (CHF), asthma etc., pulse oximetry is used to measure the saturation of oxygen (SpO2).
