TRICHY: A visit by two state ministers to ensure water flow into the tanks and lakes ended up in an embarrassment of sorts as the villagers raised their voice against the delay in getting the Cauvery river water to the tail-end areas in Thayanur, Trichy , on Tuesday.The team comprising state tourism minister Vellamandi N Natarajan and backward and minority welfare minister S Valaramathi arrived at Thayanur to check the water flow in old Kattalai mettu canal and new kattalai mettur canal as a part of their tour to some of the lakes and tanks in Trichy.It turned out to be a bitter experience for the two local ministers as the locals intercepted them and asked them for reason for the delay in the water released from Cauvery River reaching their area even after several weeks.The protesting villagers attributed the official apathy to the delay to release the water into the canal and they also pointed out their ‘prompt’ work by letting the water into the canal ahead of the minister’s visit.Upset by the question, the ministers assured to take action to ensure the water reaching the tail-end area. Yet, the villagers continued to engage in arguments with the ministers. On the sidelines of the inspection, the minister Vellamandi Natarajan said that 45 lake and ponds out of 75 were filled with water in the district. “The water storage level reached up to 2 meters. The efforts are on to store water up to one more meter and also to bring the water to the tail-end areas for the welfare of the farmers,” he said.
