Normal life unaffected in central region

Police sources said there was no major incident anywhere in the Central region encompassing eight districts. The two Left parties jointly staged protests at places including Tiruchi, Tiruverumbur, Tiruvarur, Needamangalam, Sirkazhi and Thalaignayiru. Buses - government and private - plied as usual in the region with no untoward incident reported anywhere. The sources said around 2,724 protestors, including 260 women, were arrested across the region.

Buses - government and private - plied as usual in the region with no untoward incident reported anywhere. The bandh call given by the Congress evoked mixed response among the trading community. Expressing solidarity with the bandh, many shopkeepers downed shutters across the region, while in several other areas it was business as usual with the traders carrying on with their routine business activity. The BJP government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi came in for sharp attack from the two Left parties and other Opposition parties who condemned the sharp hike in the prices of fuel saying it severely affected all sections of the society. The day witnessed protests in different forms - road roko, rail roko and demonstrations. Cadre of the two Left parties, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Congress, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Vidhuthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi hit the streets condemning the BJP government on the fuel price hike issue at some places. Protests were also carried out separately by the CPI, CPI-M, DMK and the Congress. The two Left parties jointly staged protests at places including Tiruchi, Tiruverumbur, Tiruvarur, Needamangalam, Sirkazhi and Thalaignayiru. In Tiruchi city, around 195 CPI and CPI-M cadre, including 22 women, were arrested after they attempted to stage an agitation near the Passport Office. The cadre assembled near the Gandhi Market arch and took out a procession when they were arrested midway by the police. A few protesters sat on the road to register their protest leading to traffic hold up for some time. Around 70 cadre of the two Left parties, Congress, MDMK, VCK and DMK were arrested after they attempted to lay siege a post office at Kollidam on the outskirts of Tiruchi city. At Budalur railway station in Thanjavur, a group of around 40 CPI-M cadre were arrested after they sat in front of the Chennai-bound Cholan express resulting in the detention of the train for three minutes. An attempt was made to indulge in rail roko agitation by around 70 members of the Opposition parties when they were arrested.
