Demand for trains, coach repair unit at consultative meet

Trichy: A charter of demands including the establishment of a coach maintenance facility either at Kumbakonam or Mayiladuthurai was submitted by parliamentarians from Trichy and Madurai at the annual railway consultative meeting held at Madurai. A total of 12 MPs including seven from Madurai, four from Trichy and one from Kerala took part in the meeting. Perambalur MP RP Marutharajaa in his representation to the railway GM requested the railway board to lay a new line from Ariyalur to Namakkal via Perambalur. The memorandum also included a demand for operating the Chennai-Trichy Cholan Express fully with chair car coaches as it was a day train.The general manager of Southern Railway, R K Kulshrestha, chaired the meeting with members of parliament belonging to both houses in Madurai and Trichy divisions. According to sources, his request was being considered.

Principal heads of departments and divisional railway managers (DRMs) of Madurai and Trichy divisions also attended.According to railway officials, MPs K Parasuraman from Thanjavur, R K Bharathimohan from Mayiladuthurai, M Chandrakasi from Chidambaram and N Gokulakrishnan from Puducherry alone represented Trichy division though there were 14 Lok Sabha and six Rajya Sabha MPs. During the course of the meeting, MPs put forth their requirements both in terms of additional train services as well as additional stoppages.Among his 20-point charter of demands, Mayiladuthurai MP R K Bharathimohan highlighted various issues such as restoration of Mayiladuthurai - Trichy express, increasing the frequency of Rameswaram-Tirupathi express to daily and introduction of a new daily express between Mangalore junction and Mayiladuthurai via Shoranur, Palakkad, Palani, Dindigul and Trichy.Thanjavur MP K Parasuraman demanded stoppage for all express trains at Boodhalur railway station in Thanjavur district. According to sources, his request was being considered. Perambalur MP RP Marutharajaa in his representation to the railway GM requested the railway board to lay a new line from Ariyalur to Namakkal via Perambalur.
