2 killed, 3 injured as lightning sets off blast at stone quarry

The accident took place when the lightning struck the unexploded explosives on Thursday.The manager and four other workers were bathing in a pond in the quarry when the lightning struck triggering an explosion. Three workers identified as Shanmugam, 34, K Ganesan, 40, and K Srinivasan, 33, suffered injuries.The accident happened in the quarry belonging to R Muthusamy 41 from Melur. But the deceased were unfortunate to be taking bath near the site when the accident happened. On hearing the death of Arumugam, his father Theerthayi, 70, also died after suffering a heart attack. Police said that the workers had drilled holes in the rocks and filled them with explosives.

Trichy: Two men were killed and three others sustained injuries after lightning set fire to a cache of explosives in a private quarry at Muthudayanpatti in Pudukkottai district of on Thursday.The deceased were identified as G Arumugam, 50, the quarry manager, and R Palanivel, 60, a worker. On hearing the death of Arumugam, his father Theerthayi, 70, also died after suffering a heart attack. Three workers identified as Shanmugam, 34, K Ganesan, 40, and K Srinivasan, 33, suffered injuries.The accident happened in the quarry belonging to R Muthusamy 41 from Melur. Police said that the workers had drilled holes in the rocks and filled them with explosives. Though they detonated the explosives, some of which failed to go off on Wednesday. But the deceased were unfortunate to be taking bath near the site when the accident happened. The Thirukokarnam police have registered a case and are investigating
