‘CM has ordered water release into Vennaru, Cauvery rivers’

Trichy: Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has instructed to release water into the Vennaru river from Grand Anaicut for samba cultivation, food and civil supplies minister R Kamaraj has said.At an event to release water into the Thiyageswarar temple tank from the Pamini river on Friday, Kamaraj said that the Tamil Nadu government was keen on storing water in all the water bodies not only for irrigation purposes but also for recharging the groundwater table across the state, he said.While replying to questions by reporters over widespread agitations by farmers for water across the district, the minister said that the chief minister had ordered to release the required quantum of water into Vennaru and Cauvery rivers.“Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami informed me that he had ordered to release the required quantum of water into Vennaru and Cauvery rivers so that the farmers from both basins would benefit. As per his order, the sluices of both rivers in Kallanai would be raised,” said Kamaraj.Meanwhile, a section of farmers headed by Desiya Thenninthiya Nathigal Inaippu Vivasayigal Sangam state secretary P Ayyakannu besieged the PWD office at Subramaniapuram in Trichy demanding water to be released from the north bank canal of Mukkombu barrage.As the barrage has been shut after the collapse of nine shutters, the branch canals such as Pullambadi, Peruvalai, Ayyan and Panguni have been dry for more than 23 days.On information, PWD chief engineer Senthilkumar held talks with the agitating farmers and assured to release water into the north bank canal.
