Trichy: A DMK functionary who was formerly a member of the Perambalur district panchayat council was arrested on Thursday for assaulting a woman at her beauty parlour about a month ago. As the footage of the assault recorded from a CCTV camera installed at the beauty parlour went viral, the DMK high command suspended him from the party’s primary membership.S Selvakumar, 46, was said to have financed a beautician identified as S Sathya in lakhs to expand her chain of beauty parlours in Perambalur town.However, differences cropped up when the DMK man asked Sathya to repay the loan. As the relationship between the duo soured, Selvakumar assaulted her at the beauty parlour in Venkatesapuram a month ago demanding settlement of the debt.After the incident, the former panchayat council member and the victim were said to have agreed to settle the dispute amicably. However, it is alleged that Selvakumar threatened Sathya again to repay the loan.Meanwhile, the CCTV footage of the assault was uploaded on social media platforms attracting public attention. Based on a complaint lodged by the victim, Perambalur police said that they arrested the former panchayat council member on Thursday afternoon. He was subsequently remanded in judicial custody. As the incident attracted widespread criticism against DMK on social media platforms, party general secretary K Anbazhagan on Thursday suspended Selvakumar from the party’s primary membership.It may be recalled that a similar incident involving DMK cadre had occurred in Chennai last month leading to the suspension of two members from the party’s primary membership. They had assaulted employees of a restaurant for refusing to give them free biryani. The CCTV footage of the incident had also gone viral.
