Trichy: Encouraging residents to take up “my waste, my responsibility” concept involving recycling of biodegradable waste into manure, Trichy City Corporation on Monday launched a home composting awareness campaign among residents. While urging residents to recycle and reuse waste generated by households on South Ramalinga Nagar streets, the civic body urged residents welfare associations (RWA) to assist them in making the residents take responsibility for the waste they generated. In order to contain the waste generation in the city which hovers around 450 tonnes now, the civic body has been urging residents and commercial establishments to opt for recycling waste instead of handing it over to sanitary workers. The home composting campaign which involves door-to-door canvassing among the residents has been scheduled to go on for three months till December 15. “Instead of conducting awareness meeting in closed hall, we planned to meet residents on streets and encourage them to help us in containing the daily waste generation quantum. Eco-friendly methods to recycle waste within households were explained to residents for their consideration,” corporation commissioner N Ravichandran said. The corporation also requested RWAs in Shanmuga Nagar and Ramalinga Nagar to furnish details of vacant plot owners for urging them to keep the premises clean and free of objects facilitating the breeding of dengue-spreading mosquitoes. “We have identified 450 scrap dealers in the city for residents to sell non-biodegradable waste such as plastics, glass and leather waste. The list of scrap dealers with contact numbers will be released soon to help residents sell their non-biodegradable waste at their doorstep,” the commissioner added.Civic body officials with the help of NSS students from city colleges distributed pamphlets comprising viable waste recycling methodologies to residents of Ramalinga Nagar. As many as 15 residents were also handed over a couple of pipes each to recycle kitchen waste into manure through pipe composting for being used in gardens. Further, the corporation plans to conduct the second phase of solid waste management exhibition by end of the month to technically support the residents’ efforts to recycle waste.
