Trichy: Putting pedal to the metal, Trichy Smart City Limited has expedited works on a proposal to revamp as many as three roundabouts and two traffic islands here under the smart city programme. Trichy corporation has identified a contractor to redevelop these traffic regulators as part of the city beautification drive by setting up fountains, decorative lights and landscaping at an estimated outlay of Rs 1.47 crore.Since six national highways intersect at Trichy, the city has more than 25 major roundabouts and traffic islands. Considered the gateway for central and delta districts, private firms and banks have struck agreements with the civic body to maintaining these traffic regulators. However, owing to poor periodical maintenance, advertisers for political parties have been defacing the roundabouts and traffic islands with posters and flex banners. The corporation had earlier roped in a New Delhi-based consultant to identify viable traffic islands and roundabouts for redevelopment. This was in the backdrop of the city being named the most liveable in Tamil Nadu by the Union government, and also because of the ensuing cleanliness and liveability ranking exercise.It was based on such studies that as many as five roundabouts and traffic islands were selected for undertaking redevelopment in the first phase of the pan-city beautification drive. Traffic islands in Thiruvanaikoil trunk road and Williams road signal, and traffic roundabouts, namely Kamarajar roundabouts in Chathiram bus stand and Central bus stand, as well as MGR roundabout near district court will be revamped under the drive in the next two months.“A contractor has been identified to beautify five roundabouts and traffic islands at an estimated cost of Rs 1.47 crore. Besides fountains and decorative lights, attractive landscaping will be carried out to project the city as the cleanest and most liveable among visitors,” S Kannan, executive engineer with the city corporation said. While MGR roundabout has already been equipped with water fountain, official sources said that the existing facility will be revamped through smart city proposal. Civil works for the beautification drive are likely to commence in the next two weeks and are expected to be over before December. Appreciating the beautification plans, residents have urged officials to undertake periodical maintenance in the traffic regulators as posters and advertisements have been defacing them.
