Students develop 107 smart city apps to cater to citizens

Trichy: Smart city does not entitle only a visible change in the infrastructure of a city but also accounts for the availability of citizen services under one roof without running pillar to post.Trichy, having been selected as one of the 100 cities under smart city mission to revamp urban infrastructure, students of St Joseph’s College here have developed 107 smart city Android applications utilising digital platforms to cater to citizen services such as transfer of vehicle ownership and availing new electricity connection.As Information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled services are much needed for a city to become digitally smart, a Coimbatore-based startup, Climate Smart Technologies entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) recently with St Joseph’s College to train students to develop citizen service mobile applications.As many as 85 students belonging to the computer science department were trained in six-day long Appathon training to develop Android applications. “Every government department has dozens of forms to be filled for availing a particular service. Instead of visiting the offices to obtain forms, we planned to develop Android apps loaded with the applications forms which can be filled through mobile phones and applied. Even applications for real-time civic issues can be developed by the trained students,” Jeevanandhan Duraisamy, founder of the company said.With all 107 applications released into Google Play platform recently, developers said that they would go live once the respective government departments provide access to accept third-party data for receiving applications.“Students came forward voluntarily to participate in such add-on training programmes to help the public get their works done. Such expertise in developing mobile applications will enhance their career prospects,” Dr D P Jeyapalan, head, department of computer science said.
