Trichy: There has been a significant increase in the number of pelvic and acetabular fractures among accident victims in Trichy over the course of the past few years, according to orthopaedic specialists in the city. They stated that while pelvic and acetabular injuries used to be rare in the past, now at least 25 people per month on an average undergo surgery for the same in the city.In order to provide better treatment for the patients by training surgeons in the pelvis and acetabular fracture management, an emerging subspecialty of orthopaedics, a two-day cadaveric workshop and continuing medical education (CME) lecture was organised by Kauvery Hospital in association with Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital on September 22 and 23.Pelvis and acetabulum fractures are high-velocity injuries that occur following major road accidents. According to HOD, department of orthopaedics, at Kauvery Hospital Dr P R Ramasamy, high-velocity accidents – especially in the national highways have increased in Trichy only in the past three to five years. He stated that this injury is common among people who drive a car at more than 100 kmph without wearing a seat-belt and suffer an accident. Two-wheeler riders who travel at high speed and suffer an accident are also prone to this. “When pelvis gets fractured, an individual can bleed up to 2.5 litres of blood inside the pelvis, which is half of the individual’s total blood volume. Hence treatment of these fractures is life-saving when done in an efficient way,” he added. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu Orthopaedics Association (TNOA) executive committee member, central region, Dr J Terrence Jose Jerome, who was invited to the CME, said that more orthopaedic surgeons should be given training on subspecialties and only then effective treatment could be provided for patients. “If you take pelvic fracture, for example, it used to be a very rare case in Trichy and in the past, even if a person suffered that, he/she used to only get treatment in Chennai. Many orthopaedic surgeons here are still not used to performing surgery for pelvic fracture frequently. But by training all orthopaedic surgeons certain subspecialties, treatment for such cases could be given in the city itself,” he told TOI.He also said that since pelvic fracture directly affects urinary bladder, external genitalia, and urinary tube, and uterus in addition for women, it requires extra training to perform surgeries for patients who suffer these injuries.
