Separate petitions were given by K. Baskar, AIADMK Pudukottai town secretary, to the Pudukottai Town Police and Tirumayam Circle Inspector Office. However, the Inspectors of both police stations rejected permission sought by the AIADMK for the staging demonstrations at the three places. Police sources confirmed that permission was rejected and that the demonstrations did not take place as planned on Monday. Further, permission was also rejected on the ground that 30 (2) Police Act was in force from September 18 to October 3 in Ponnamaravathy sub-division. The AIADMK had planned to stage demonstrations on Monday to condemn the DMK for spreading false information and for their alleged slanderous remarks on Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar hailing from Pudukottai district.

more-in TIRUCHI The Pudukottai district police on Sunday rejected a couple of petitions given by the AIADMK seeking permission for staging demonstrations in front of the house of DMK MLA S. Regupathy in Pudukottai town and in front of the college belonging to him at Sivapuram near Pudukottai on Monday. The AIADMK had planned to stage demonstrations on Monday to condemn the DMK for spreading false information and for their alleged slanderous remarks on Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar hailing from Pudukottai district. The demonstrations were planned to be held in front Mr. Regupathy’s house in Pudukottai town and in front of the DMK district unit office, besides in front of his college at Sivapuram under Tirumayam police station limits. The permission was rejected by the Pudukottai Town Inspector on the grounds that the two venues chosen for staging demonstrations in the town could cause hindrance to the public and vehicular movements as the places were dotted with commercial establishments and schools. Further, it was also rejected on the ground that 30 (2) Police Act was in force in Pudukottai sub-division. The Tirumayam Police Inspector rejected it on the ground that no demonstration could be allowed in front of schools and colleges as it could lead to severe traffic hold-up affecting students. Further, permission was also rejected on the ground that 30 (2) Police Act was in force from September 18 to October 3 in Ponnamaravathy sub-division. Police sources confirmed that permission was rejected and that the demonstrations did not take place as planned on Monday. The Pudukottai Town Police had recently booked an attempt-to-murder case against two DMK functionaries — Thennalur Palaniappan and Ramalingam — for allegedly threatening a person said to be an AlADMK supporter after the latter took objection to their alleged “defamatory remarks” made them by against Mr. Vijaya Baskar during a demonstration organised by the DMK here recently demanding the sacking of the Minister in connection with the gutkha scam.
