Elephant Masini to be shifted back to temple soon

Trichy: Samayapuram temple elephant Masini is recuperating well in Veterinary college and research institute, Orathanadu and will be shifted to the temple soon, said temple officials on Thursday.Masini was taken to the institute in July following complaints of swelling in front right limb and in abdomen region. She was later shifted to Ujjaini Kaliamman temple in Mahalikudi which is 2.5 km away from Samayapuram temple.Forest officials had said that Masini had developed minor wounds when it trampled the mahout in the temple premises. Veterinarians attended to it and most of the wounds have healed except for one in the right leg. However, he did not mention when Masini could be shifted to the temple.Meanwhile, a division bench of Madurai Bench of Madurai High Court on Wednesday sought report on health condition of Masini in response to a PIL filed in the court.The nine-year-old female elephant came into spotlight after trampling her mahout to death inside the temple on May 25 this year. Since then, she has been undergoing treatment and her health condition is being monitored by a team of doctors.Samayapuram temple joint commissioner, C Kumaradurai told TOI that doctors have confirmed Masini is recovering from her injuries.“Now that doctors have said that Masini can be shifted back to the temple, we are in talks with the forest department to shift her,” he said.
