Trichy: At a time when the #MeToo movement against sexual harassment in workplace is going viral in the country, the superintendent of police, Tiruvarur, has launched a post card movement to safeguard girl students from sexual harassment and abuse and take appropriate action against the offenders.Launching the programme at the government girls higher secondary school at Koothanallur in Tiruthuraipoondi taluk in Tiruvarur district on Monday, the SP, V Vikraman, distributed postcards carrying his name and office address to all girl students. He asked them to write down their grievances, if any, on sexual harassment and sexual assault and post them immediately.“Most of the girls coming to the school are from the rural parts of the district. They come across many such problems. However, we cannot expect them to go and register the complaint online. They don’t know how to raise the issue on social media. Going to the police station for lodging a complaint is itself a big challenge for them,” Vikraman told TOI.“If they happen to face such problems, they usually keep mum. Even if they want to raise the issue, they are asked to keep quiet by their own family and relatives, unable to face the society”, he added.Vikraman had introduced the movement in Tirunelveli when he was working in the district and it received good response from the girl children. He said he had solved a number of problems the girls faced. “We have sorted out lots of issues that girl children usually face in childhood. In many cases, the victim’s family members themselves were the accused. So, we have decided to take the movement to all the schools across the district covering both government as well as private girl schools”, he added.
