Trichy: Around 50 medical students from KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College in Trichy staged a protest late on Wednesday night after a staff nurse allegedly spoke to an MBBS intern in a disrespectful manner.The protesting students, from the Interns and Postgraduates Association of Tamilnadu (IPAT), also alleged that interns and PG students were not being provided with essential equipment like gloves and syringes while treating patients.One of the student told TOI that staff nurses have been speaking to interns and PG students in a humiliating manner and that they had taken the issue to the college administration prior to the protest. “Only five days back, a staff nurse had spoken to one of the interns in a disrespectful manner. We had taken this issue to the college dean back then. Only because it happened again, we staged a protest. We are regularly being subjected to humiliating treatment by staff nurses,” a member of IPAT association said.The protesters claimed that despite several requests, they were not being given gloves while treating patients and often got reply that gloves are out of stock. Same was the reason given when asked for syringes. “Without gloves, we have the possibility of getting infected,” a protester said.The member of IPAT also said that Rs 1,000 was collected from them every month and no reason was given for it by the college administration.Dean of KAPV Government Medical College Dr G Anitha said that the issue had been sorted out.
