Trichy: A large number of devotees from across Trichy district gathered to witness Soorasamharam on Tuesday, held as a part of Vayalur Murugan temple’s Kandha Sashti celebrations.The event which marks the annihilation of Soorapadman by Lord Murugan was enacted around 8pm.The crowd started swelling right from early morning to witness the much-touted religious event held on the sixth day of Kandha Sashti festival.Around 9am, a special puja was conducted after which the enactment of Lord Murugan receiving lance from goddess Parvathi took place.On Wednesday morning, abhishekam would be performed on the presiding deity, and around 7pm the celestial wedding of Lord Murugan and Deivayanai will take place.Special pujas and abhishekams were also organised across other Murugan temples in the city. Extensive security measures were undertaken to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.Kandha Sesthi festival had kickstarted at the Vayalur Murugan temple on November 8 with a special puja.Since the start of the six-day festival, several special pujas and other programmes were organised by the temple administration.From November 8 to 12, a special procession of the lord was organised every night.Sashti week is an auspicious period for Hindus in Tamil Nadu when several devotees undertake fasting.
