Officials said that they would take all preventive measures to ensure that there was no disease outbreak in case of flooding.Deputy director of health services (DDHS) Trichy, Dr A Subramani, said there was no reason for the public to panic as no major alert had been issued for the district. He said that three medical teams had been deputed for each of the 14 revenue blocks. “In case of any situation of flooding due to Gaja, which may lead to affected people being put up in rescue shelters, the medical teams will rush there, conduct medical check-ups and undertake sanitation measures,” the DDHS said.The health department urged the public to maintain hygiene so that no water-borne or vector-borne diseases spread in the event of flooding. Officials said they were wary of a possible spread of typhoid, cholera or leptospirosis if there was any flooding. “We’ve all the medicines ready to be provided to the people in case of transmission of diseases due to a possible flood. We also have enough medication for unknown bites or snake/ animal bites,” the official said.Meanwhile, a source from the health department said that they would be paying more emphasis on post-flood measures, if any, to make sure that the number of fever cases, including H1N1 infection, did not become alarming. “Already there are around 200 new fever cases being reported in Trichy every day. In such a situation, we’ll make sure that extra measures are taken to curb the outbreak of fever becoming massive due to a potential flood situation,” the source said.
