Trichy: Gaja left its mark on Trichy too after making its landfall in Vedaranyam in Nagappattinam district on Friday. The central district faced the horror of gusty winds uprooting trees and causing electric lines to snap besides leaving two people killed.A cloudy sky prevailed since Friday afternoon indicating chances of rain after the cyclone hit land around midnight. The rain, accompanied by gusty winds, threw normal life out of gear from 6 am in the city and rural parts of the district. Going by the statement of the district administration, the district recorded an average rainfall of 27.09 mm and a total rainfall of 677.03 mm on Friday. The high velocity winds uprooted and broke more than 100 trees and branches in Manapparai, Marungapuri, Thurvarankurichi road and Kulithalai road causing traffic blockade for about half an hour in the morning.Tree falling incidences also affected traffic movements in areas like Woraiyur and K K Nagar areas besides several streets. Though the district administration had pressed workers of the local body administration into service for restoration work, the residents also joined hands with them.
