Trichy: A day after Cyclone Gaja ravaged Pudukkottai district, roads were cleared in most parts of the district to reach out to the affected areas, especially remote villages. The day also marked protests in many parts of the district from people awaiting restoration of power supply and drinking water supply alleging they were ignored by officials.People in Kulamangalam village near Alangudi took to the streets protesting alleged neglect by officials who had not visited the village for rehabilitation work. Farmers in Vadakadu too lamented that no official from the revenue department or other departments had arrived to enumerate the extent of damage caused in the cyclone. A villager from Pallathi viduthi near Alangudi who lost his house said that authorities could have taken some precautionary measures in interior villages instead of just camping in the coastal areas.“The real damage has occurred within villages away from the coastal zone. We were not told that cyclone could damage our houses. Otherwise we could have done something to save our houses,” said Rajesh Kannan, a villager. Given the extent of damage caused to the power infrastructure in the district, officials say that it would take at least a week or even more to restore power in all the places in the district. Manpower from neighbouring districts started arriving on Friday and work on restoring power supply has been carried on a war footing.Saying that the priority is to restore power in a phased manner across Pudukottai district, health minister C Vijayabasakar said that power has been restored in some of the wards in Ponnamaravathy, Thirumayam and Pudukkottai town. “Work is under way to repair and replace 25,000 electric poles that have been damaged in the cyclone across the district among which 11,000 poles were damaged in Alangudi area. A total of 250 generators are in place to ensure water supply to different places,” he said.
