TRICHY: Aggrieved by the loss of banana plantations after it was hit by cyclone Gaja , a 29-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train near Mambalachalai in Trichy in the late hours on Friday. The government railway police (GRP) registered a case of suicide driven by crop damage.N Selvaraj from Melakondaiyampettai was found dead on the railway track near Mambalachalai in the city in the midnight. He is survived by his wife Saranya, 24, and a two-and-half-year old daughter.Selvaraj, while walking on the railway track, informed his friends over mobile phone that he was going to end his life. His friends rushed to the spot and found his severely injured body on the track. On information, GRP at Trichy railway junction reached the spot at 3.30 am on Saturday. Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem.Selvaraj’s friends and family members told police that he was very depressed after seeing his one-and-half acres of banana plantation on leased land lay flattened on Friday morning. “He spent around Rs 5 lakh, borrowed from money lenders, for growing the banana trees. The loss of the crop has devastated him. Though his wife consoled him, he took the extreme step,” said his cousin C Sakthivel.Saranya lodged a complaint with the GRP stating that he took the tragic step owing to frustration. GRP registered an FIR in this connection.
