Trichy: Tension prevailed at Kothamangalam, near Alangudi, of Pudukottai district on Sunday after angry villagers set ablaze five government vehicles, alleging the government of not taking proper post-disaster management measures in the village. The incident led to the arrest of around 50 protesters.Sources said a large number of police personnel from neighbouring districts like Trichy, Perambalur and Ariyalur, have been deployed at Kothamangalam after cyclone attack. Prompted by a lack of rescue measures, the villagers staged rod roko on Saturday night. Many alleged the government was yet to take action properly even a day after the disaster left a lasting damage in the region.At this time, Alangudi tahsildar Rethinavathy paid a visit to the village, taking stock of the situation. The residents confronted her, questioning the officer over the measures adopted to minimise the damage. Pudukottai district revenue officer (DRO) A Ramasamy, revenue divisional officer Daisy Kumar and Alangudi deputy superintendent of police G Ayyanar then rushed to the spot for a conciliatory talk.The public still behaved badly and triggered a heated argument with the government officials. As the situation went from bad to worse, some villagers set fire to five vehicles of the officials while others pelted stones at them.On Sunday, police visited the village and picked up around 50 people in connection with the incident. Several other villages, especially in Alangudi and Aranthangi, also saw protests, demanding restoration of electricity and proper supply of drinking water.Meanwhile, health minister C Vijayabaskar, who was carrying out inspection in the district, told reporters that the damage estimation process was being conducted in Pudukottai.
