Nagapattinam: Police have registered a case against a union secretary of AIADMK for allegedly assaulting a village administration officer (VAO) during cyclone relief works in Nagapattinam district on Sunday. Condemning the assault against the official, the Tamil Nadu Village Administrative Officers Association (TNVAOA) staged a protest demanding the arrest of the AIADMK functionary.Police sources identified the victim as S Selvi, VAO of Agarakadambanoor village near Kizhvelur. On Friday evening, when the Selvi was overseeing food preparation for people who were evacuated and accommodated in a government school in the village, Siva, union secretary of AIADMK from Kizhvelur, started a verbal altercation with the VAO demanding swiftness in food preparation.Sources said that Siva assaulted and verbally abused the VAO when she was replying to him. Onlookers rescued Selvi and took her to a nearby hospital.The incident was brought to the notice of TNVAOA and a complaint was lodged by the victim at Kizhvelur police station. Based on the complaint, police said that a case under six IPC sections including IPC 354 was registered against the AIADMK functionary. “The violent assault was unprovoked and it happened while we were pursuing relief measures for cyclone-hit villagers. Though an FIR was registered, police personnel are hesitating to arrest the AIADMK man.” TNN
