Thanjavur: A group of youngsters involved in collecting and supplying relief materials for the cyclone-affected hamlets were awestruck by the gesture shown by villagers near Peravurani town in Thanjavur district.For the relief materials provided by the Trichy youth, coconut farmers in return gave them tender coconuts collected from the trees that were uprooted in cyclone Gaja Volunteers said Rs 5 lakh worth relief materials sourced and sponsored by Trichy-based students, NRIs and musician G V Prakash were transported on a minitruck to Nadiyam panchayat and adjoining villages near Peravurani on Sunday. When volunteers completed distributing relief materials to cyclone-hit villagers near Marungapallam, locals -- mostly coconut farmers – loaded the empty minitruck with tender coconuts from the uprooted trees.“The villagers insisted us to share the tender coconuts among the youths who donated the essential commodities. Though they could have sold the coconuts in the market, villagers said they do not have the heart to send us empty handed,” Gunasekaran Puniyamoorthy, a volunteer involved in the relief work, told TOI.Hundreds of tender coconuts gifted by the villagers were sent to a college in Trichy where they were given to students who had contributed to the relief work.Many youth who have worked for similar relief operations including Chennai and Kerala floods said they have not encounter such a gesture from the affected people so far.
