Trichy: Chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami visited Pattukottai town in Thanjavur district and Soorapallam hamlet where several coconut farms were ravaged in the cyclone, on Tuesday. “Because of the preventive efforts taken by the government, the damages have been mitigated,” he said.The chief minister, who was accompanied by deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam and chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan distributed financial compensation to 32 families. “More than 40 lakh coconut trees were uprooted and more than 1 lakh electric poles damaged. Five families, which witnessed loss of lives, received Rs 10 lakh each as compensation, while a compensation of Rs 10,000 each was provided to four families whose houses were completely damaged.

But he cut short his visit citing bad weather and heavy rain in Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam towns, following which the helicopter in which he was travelling returned to Trichy on Tuesday afternoon.He said that he would visit Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur another day. “More than 40 lakh coconut trees were uprooted and more than 1 lakh electric poles damaged. Workers are trying to restore electricity on a war-footing. Normalcy would return at the earliest,” Palaniswami said before departing for Chennai.Earlier, addressing reporters after inspecting the cyclone-affected houses in Machuvadi and Mapillaiyarkulam localities of Pudukottai district, Palaniswami accused the opposition parties in the state of politicising the natural disaster. “Relief works went on for a month after floods in Kerala. Opposition parties in Kerala worked together with the government. Such helping tendency is missing among the opposition parties here,” said Palaniswami, who was undertaking the tour four days after the cyclone hit the delta districts.The chief minister said he would likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to seek financial aid and that a survey is underway to assess the damage. “We will submit a report to him on the total damage caused by the cyclone,” he said.Palaniswami said compensation was being given to the affected people. “We will ensure that relief measures reach all the affected people,” he added. “Because of the preventive efforts taken by the government, the damages have been mitigated,” he said.The chief minister, who was accompanied by deputy chief minister O Panneerselvam and chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan distributed financial compensation to 32 families.
