Repair work takes toll on unaffected electric poles too

Tiruvarur: Food minister R Kamaraj has said the restoration works on broken or fallen electric poles have damaged a lot of unaffected poles too in the cyclone-ravaged areas. A total of Rs 9.16 crore has been credited to the savings account of 20,078 families in cyclone damages for their property loss in Tiruvarur district, he added.“Restoration of electric poles and power supply are a big challenge. Rural areas, however, are yet to catch up, with only 52 % of reparation finished, the minister said. District collector L Nirmal Raj and revenue officials and other department authorities took part in the meeting.

The minister was briefing reporters after attending a review meeting on the ongoing post-Gaja restoration works and disbursal of relief materials.While the town areas have power supply fully restored, Muthupettai town panchayat has 25% of works still to be done. Rural areas, however, are yet to catch up, with only 52 % of reparation finished, the minister said. A total of Rs 9.16 crore has been credited to the savings account of 20,078 families in cyclone damages for their property loss in Tiruvarur district, he added.“Restoration of electric poles and power supply are a big challenge. As the entire district has clayish soil, we witness a number of standing electric poles being affected during the process. Workers are seeing such problem every day. In all, we have restored 20,000 poles out of 45,000 damaged,” he said.The minister said a number of workers from other districts would reach here to expedite the works. Once it was done, the entire work would pick up speed, he said. A series of medical camp have been organised across the district in anticipation of the intermittent rain."From the first day of the Gaja landfall, we have been experiencing intermittent rain. A few medical camps were conducted to avoid potential disease outbreak ," he said.The enumeration for the cyclone-hit areas, villages, families and individual have been carried out across the district in such a way that no individual should be left out, he said, adding that no village or person would not be left out of the disbursal of relief and compensation. District collector L Nirmal Raj and revenue officials and other department authorities took part in the meeting.
