Trichy: Two people, including a 48-year-old woman, were electrocuted at Alangudi in Pudukottai on Monday after they allegedly came in contact with live wires hanging from a pole. The incident took place on an agriculture field in Arayapatti village when the duo went there to fetch water. The deceased have been identified as M Susila and her nephew, S Sakthivel, 28.While there are many villages in Pudukottai where power is yet to be restored after the damage caused by Cyclone Gaja, a portion of Arayapatti village got power restored on Sunday after a gap of 25 days. Susila who went to a farmland to fetch water found an electric wire hanging from a pole. Assuming it to be dead, she tried to put it aside but suffered a severe electric shock. While she died on the spot, her nephew Sakthivel who came to her rescue, also suffered shock and died on the spot. However, Tangedco executive engineer Natarajan blamed the local people for the incident alleging that they would have tried to restore power on their own without the knowledge of officials. He said that while Tangedco workers disconnected power at some places to carry out repair work, local people tried to reconnect it on their own in the midnight. He said a Tangedco wireman had found a man climbing atop the pole and trying to restore power. He had warned him against doing so and returned. However, the wire seemed to have been carrying electricity.
