Trichy: In a bid to help the farmers who have lost hundreds of trees during cyclone gaja, the district administration has taken an initiative to bridge the gap between the farmers and timber merchants who wants to trade uprooted trees through ‘Uzhavan App’. Moreover, the revenue department has also set up 5 temporary procurement centres in the district to facilitate the stakeholders.Hundreds of farmers from Vedaranyam, Thalaignayiru, Keelaiyur, Keelvelur and Nagapattinam blocks have lost lakhs of trees which would have fetched a good price from the open market. In order to compensate their loss, the district administration has commenced enumeration to register the names of the farmers and their damaged trees and properties.Meanwhile, the district collector S Sureshkumar has taken an initiative to bring both the farmers and timber traders under one platform. For that, he has asked them to register with 'Uzhavan App'. Based on the information shared by both the stakeholders both can be benefitted.Timber traders have been asked to buy a variety of trees such as teak, mango, jackfruit which can be used for making quality furniture at a reasonable price so that the affected farmers will be benefitted, the collector said.This apart, the TNPL has been asked to take the uprooted trees. For that, the district administration has set up 5 procurement centres in Andarkaadu, Kuravanpulam, Kathiripulam, Maruthur and Thagattur. Farmers have to bring their timbers to the centres where the officials from TNPL and traders coming from across the district would converge there.
