Two Trichy temple elephants sent for annual rejuvenation camp

TRICHY: Two temple elephants in Trichy were on Thursday sent for the Tamil Nadu government-sponsored annual rejuvenation camp at Thekkampatti in Coimbatore district . Physical characteristics such as weight, height and the diameter of the stomach of elephants would be monitored closely by veterinary doctors during their stay there, HR&CE officials added. The 48-day-long rejuvenation camp is meant for temple and mutt elephants.A team of four veterinary doctors and veterinary assistants accompanied the two elephants -- Andal from Sri Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam and Lakshmi from Arulmigu Thayumanaswami temple in Rockfort -- to ensure a safe travel for the jumbos on trucks.“We have sent two veterinary teams with the elephants with adequate medicines to keep a watch on the health and safety of the jumbos during the travel on road,” animal husbandry department regional joint director S Murugesan told TOI.Organised by the Hindu religious and charitable endowment (HR&CE) department, the rejuvenation camp will be held on the banks of the Bhavani river.The camp that begins on December 14 would go on till January 30, 2019.Officials said the elephants would be taken out for a walk twice a day apart from being fed with nutritious natural food during the camp.
