Trichy: A Sivalingam, who is known for inventing Tamil telegraphy, passed away at his residence in K K Nagar of Trichy at 7 am Sunday after battling with prolonged age-related ailments. He was 94.As per his wish, his body will be donated to KAP Viswanathan government medical college, Trichy on Tuesday. While American Samuel Morse invented telegraph in 19th century - which was early form of long distance communication - Sivalingam developed Tamil telegraphy in 1955.Born in 1924, he joined postal department as telegraph clerk in 1944. While working at Karambakudi, he invented Tamil telegraphy. “Telegraph was there only in English during those days. He understood its need for people of Tamil Nadu who could not understand English during those days,” said his daughter, S Manonmani, 66. He learned Morse code for the purpose and being a scholar in Tamil language. He developed Tamil telegraphy and even demonstrated it in front of various ministers in 1961. He was survived by his two sons and a daughter.
