No adequate toilets at temporary bus shelters

Corporation officials, when contacted, assured to provide additional mobile toilets at the temporary bus shelters. Trichy: Passengers are irked at the absence of adequate urinals and toilets at the temporary bus shelters set up on Williams Road to handle the Pongal rush. Though the temporary bus shelters were established at an estimated cost of Rs 3-4 lakh each, passengers lament that only a very limited number of toilets were set up. "There is only one mobile toilet at the temporary bus shelter on Williams Road. While the Williams Road facility houses buses heading to Thanjavur and Velankanni, Mannarpuram facility accommodates buses heading to Pudukkottai and Madurai.

Trichy: Passengers are irked at the absence of adequate urinals and toilets at the temporary bus shelters set up on Williams Road to handle the Pongal rush. While men enjoy the liberty to urinate in the open, the women passengers suffer as adequate urinals are absent in the temporary facility.As the Central bus stand is incapable of handling the routine crowd of commuters, the district administration since 2013 has been setting up temporary bus shelters near Williams Road and near Mannarpuram to handle the extra rush of passengers during festivals. While the Williams Road facility houses buses heading to Thanjavur and Velankanni, Mannarpuram facility accommodates buses heading to Pudukkottai and Madurai. Though the temporary bus shelters were established at an estimated cost of Rs 3-4 lakh each, passengers lament that only a very limited number of toilets were set up. "There is only one mobile toilet at the temporary bus shelter on Williams Road. A majority of the men are urinating in the open as they do not prefer waiting in the serpentine queues to relieve themselves," S Tamilarasu, a TNSTC employee at Williams Road temporary bus shelter, said.The mobile toilet near the Warners Road is highly inadequate as thousands of people access the temporary bus shelter each day. Female passengers lamented that they had to walk for about a kilometre to find toilets in the Central bus stand and return to the temporary shelter for boarding buses. Corporation officials, when contacted, assured to provide additional mobile toilets at the temporary bus shelters.
