Thanjavur: A woman and her husband sustained grievous injuries after the latter set her on fire over a domestic scuffle.According to police, the victims have been identified as Ilayaraja, 30, of Egaram near Swamimalai in Kumbakonam and his wife I Priya, 25. They got married in 2016 and have no children.The couple used to quarrel frequently, sources said. On Tuesday too, the couple had a fight. At one point, in a fit of rage, Ilayaraja poured kerosene over Priya and set her ablaze.Subsequently, the fire spread all over her. Realising his blunder, Ilayaraja tried to safeguard Priya by putting out the flames. In the impact, the fire spread to Ilayaraja as well.Upon hearing the screams of the couple, neighbours rushed to their rescue and doused the flames. However, both of them had sustained severe burn injuries.They were rushed to the Kumbakonam government hospital where they are being treated. Meanwhile, on information Swamimalai police registered a case and commenced their investigation.Kumbakonam deputy superintendent of police Kamalakannan conducted an inquiry and got separate statements from both the injured. In her statement, Priya had said that her husband had set her on fire. Based on her statement, police have registered a case and are investigating, police sources said.
