Trichy: Aiming to keep the grassroots-level cadres and people in the loop ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Trichy urban district wing of AIADMK has adopted a new technique by issuing smartphones to its functionaries to spread its success stories to garner votes.Urban district secretary and Trichy MP P Kumar distributed smartphones to 112 functionaries including ward, area, union and wing secretaries of the party in a function organized to celebrate the 102nd birth anniversary of former chief minister and AIADMK founder MGR at Melakalkandarkottai in Trichy on Friday.“Smartphones are integral part of everyday life nowadays. Hence, we are using it to spread the schemes of our leaders directly to the people. As an MP for ten years, I have brought it several schemes. Such things will be spread among the people through the cadres,” MP Kumar told TOI on Saturday adding that they have planned to distribute smartphones to around 1,400 cadres.Urban district of Trichy AIADMK comprises Trichy-East, Trichy-West, Srirangam and part of Thiruverumbur constituencies. The rural district of the party has Rajya Sabha MP T Rathinavelu as its district secretary.The functionaries provided with smartphones have been asked to get in touch with the cadres and people online and share the messages about the successful schemes of the party through WhatsApp.Besides the functionaries, the party has also planned to give smartphones to booth committee organisers in their jurisdiction. Each booth committee organisers will be in direct contact with the 18-member team, which will in turn individually track the voters in their area. Each booth will have around 1,200 voters.The idea of Kumar to start work eying the election has raised many eyebrows whether he would be interested to contest in Trichy for the third consecutive time. Addressing the cadres at the function, he said that he would be ready to work for any candidate handpicked by the party high-command.It may be recalled that Kumar was appointed as the urban district secretary by replacing tourism minister Vellamandi N Natarajan in March 2018.
